Quick Tip
When your message contains too much information, people get overwhelmed.
They feel mentally fatigued and struggle to remember what you've said.
They don't feel inspired to take action.
Simplify. Subtract. Focus on one thing at a time.
Let's say you're writing a post.
Say This
“Here’s our speaker line-up for the conference!”
[Just enough info. Exciting!]
Not This
“Here’s our speaker
line-up … and 10 other details we want you to know about the conference, including 5 reasons why you must attend, 4 ticket levels which each have 3 payment plan options, and also, we're doing a flash sale on tickets which ends at midnight tonight with a special bonus included...”
[Too much info. Overwhelming.]
Writing an email or
post? Include one big announcement.
Doing a podcast appearance? Tell listeners about one exciting project and provide one link where they can go learn more about it.
Speaking to an audience? Leave them with one powerful question that echoes in their minds.
Telling a story? Emphasize one big idea that you want people to take away.
Just one. Not five or ten.
Resist the urge to say more, more,
more.
Make this your new writing mantra: “One thing at a time.”
The less you say, the more you will move people into action.
