How to break out of a slump... and my Magic Mike XXL dance moves.

Published: Fri, 07/10/15

Hey & happy Friday!

I spent most of today bustling around my loft, getting logistically and mentally prepared to teach a writing workshop called Make A Tiny Book. It's tomorrow! Then another round next Saturday. Double-down.

I've got my notes printed out, heart-shaped stickers, postage stamps, plenty of snacks for my participants, and some really beautiful stories, tips and templates to share.

I'm nerv-cited (nervous + excited), the way I always feel before speaking or teaching, whether it's a crowd of 5 of 50 or more. My brain is like "whoa" and my body is like "whoo!"

I hope you are gearing up for an exciting weekend, too, whatever you intend to do.

It's been exactly 15 days since my last missive to you. It zoomed by quickly and quite a bit has happened in that time!

Here's a rundown, featuring a couple of recent pieces & projects for you to enjoy...

- How to get “back on track” with a goal when you’re backsliding, hard. Oof. This was me, last week. Here are my tips on how to reboot your motivation to work out, write, paint, meditate, or whatever else you want & need to do.

- What to do when a friend is grieving — and you don’t know how to help. Because not everyone wants the same kind of "support." (Something I often need to remember.)

- Brit + Co named my newsletter (the one you're reading right now!) a must-read newsletter for inspiration and motivation. Whoa! So cool. The other 13 newsletters on their "best of the web" list look pretty rad, too.

- My client Theresa just released a new book called Creative Coupling. It's all about how to build a sexy, successful, long-term romantic relationship, and it's geared towards people who are self-employed creative types. Because when you pour thousands of hours of love into your creative business, it can be tough to carve out time and energy to give to your partner, too. It was an honor to help Theresa put this book together, and inside, you'll also find an interview with me and my boyfriend Brandon!

Love rules.

Aside from those new ditties...

Here are a few slightly-older, recent-ish pieces that you might have missed:

- You are a grown up. Do what you want. Just in case you forgot who's in charge, here. (I often do).

- How do I start charging for something I’ve always done for free? The latest installment of my advice column, Good Question. A good one for coaches, consultants, and budding entrepreneurs.

In other news...

- Remember how I was thinking about dyeing my hair electric blue? I did it. I love it.

- Also... WHOA. Have you seen the movie MAGIC MIKE XXL yet...?!!! It changed my life. I am now committed to mastering all of those ridiculously amazing dance moves. BEHOLD. My first attempt is right here. And here's me re-enacting the infamous "water bottle moment". I think you will be amused. Or possibly scarred for life.

Have a beautiful weekend.

Do (or enjoy) something silly and preposterous. Read, watch or listen to something that is just 1,000% pure entertainment. The world can be a challenging place. But there's always at least one reason to smile and laugh.

If all else fails? Just go see Magic Mike XXL for a second time. (I did. Worth it.)

xo.

-Alex

PS. I am having a sultry, throwback R&B kinda week, music-wise. You need to crank up this classic song by 112. So smoov.
