Love, love, love. (And 2 free books for you.)

Happy Valentine's Day!

Earlier today, I had a flashback to junior high school. At my school, on V-Day, you could pay a couple bucks to purchase a "Sweetheart Gram" for your crush.

Later that day, in the middle of class, someone would knock on the classroom door, bring in the Grams, and distribute them amidst squeals of glee.

I'd always wait with bated breath... hoping, praying, wishing that somebody had sent me a Gram. I wanted that pink-and-white card so badly. Plus the chocolate that came with it.

I never got a Gram. Not even once. Being a nerdy, asthmatic, flat-chested tween with huge glasses, a missing tooth, and a mouthful of braces (the kind you cranked with a key to tighten them), I guess I wasn't anybody's "romantic fantasy." (Oh, the heartbreak of 7th grade!)

I knew I wasn't the only student who felt despondent about not receiving a Gram. I remember thinking to myself, "This is so dumb. EVERYBODY should get a Gram. Not just the chosen few. Everybody deserves something nice today. And every day."

That's how I still feel today. Everybody should get to enjoy the Valentine's Day festivities. Single, dating, married, happily uncoupled, or somewhere in between. We all deserve love.

So, please consider this email to be... your official Sweetheart Gram.

It's a love note, from me to you, filled with a few treats to brighten your day.

Scientists haven't figured out how to deliver chocolate bars via email, so these other gifts will have to do...

EXTRA LOVE - IDEAS & INSPIRATION

Maybe you want to text your sweetheart, your sister, or your best friend to say, "I love you so much," but you can't find the right words to say. This list of ideas might help. Or this one.

Maybe you want to connect even more deeply with a friend or someone in your family. Here are 100 questions you can ask each other.

Maybe you want to send your sweetheart a red-hot, heart-pounding text. This might help.

Maybe you want to give your body some extra love. A new fitness routine, maybe? An inspiring tropical getaway where you'll move and stretch every day? Or maybe you'd like to get ahold of this wonderful book, written by my friend and former client, which is the perfect way to begin (or re-ignite) a gentle yoga practice. Or if you'd like to create a more loving relationship with food and your body, check out this program, created by another former client of mine. Beautiful stuff.

Or maybe the most loving thing you could do for yourself, right now, would be to step away from your phone or computer screen, snuggle into bed, close your eyes, and go to sleep.

Sweet dreams. I hope every remaining minute of your Valentine's Day is beautiful. I hope you wake up tomorrow feeling strong, energized, and ready to write, teach, coach, mentor, share, create, and give everything your heart can give

Love will always win.

-Alex

PS. I went to see Fifty Shades Darker two times in the past 72 hours. Yup. Twice. I loved it. Totally delightful escapism with a fantastic soundtrack

PPS. I ran a challenging, hilly 10K race this past weekend. I made a super-high-energy music playlist to get me up those tough slopes. Here it is. Enjoy!

PPPS. Wise words from my lifelong hero, Fred Rogers: "Love isn't a state of perfect caring. It is an active noun like struggle. To love someone is to strive to accept that person exactly the way he or she is, right here and now."

PPPPS. If this newsletter contains any typos, I apologize. I wrote it extra-fast. But love is still awesome even with a missing letter here or there. And when it comes to writing, "imperfect but done" is always better than "never finished." :)
