I started a new project at the beginning of 2021.
It’s called Great News.
Once a month, I send out a collection of news that is uplifting, hopeful, and encouraging. Big stories, interesting science facts, plus happy updates contributed by readers like you.
Because sometimes—especially when the world feels very bleak and terrifying—you just need a dose of pure joy in your life. Like a dose of medicine to get you through the weeks ahead. Something to restore your faith in humanity.
I hope that Great News can be that medicine for you.
- Great news for music lovers. A research team from the Montreal Neurological Institute studied the impact of music on the brain. They found that these 5 songs trigger dopamine release and
make you feel pleasure, satisfaction, and joy.
- A woman named Brooke volunteers at a hospital on her days off, brushing and braiding patient's hair. She says, "There's something therapeutic about the human touch," and wants to provide a simple act of caring to folks who are isolated from their families.
- Lyvia emailed to share, "We’ve adopted a puppy! His name is Cookie." Cookie was abandoned at 2 month old. When he arrived in Lyvia's life, he was very skinny, had several bite marks, and his coat was damaged. Great news: he's doing much better now, gaining weight, and thriving. Here is Cookie awhile ago, looking a bit weary. And look at Cookie today! What a happy, healthy boy!
- MaryBeth emailed to share some excellent news. Her 12 year old daughter, Jaida, set up a lemonade stand to raise money for a local farm animal rescue. She raised $73 in just a few hours!
Go, Jaida!
- Kate emailed to share some book-related news, too. She wrote a book, too! It's very sexy and it's for grown-ups, only. Children: avert your eyes.
- More congratulations are in order: Carolyn and her friend Lauren launched a new business! It's called Mental Push Plan. They help women to get mentally prepared for birth using tools based in mindfulness and
sport psychology. Wishing you all the greatest success with your new business, C and L!
- Liz has some joyous news. Her company produced a documentary film called Nightsongs. It's a film about birds who fly at night, in the dark, and their fascinating migration patterns. But really, it's a
story about "seeing and treasuring what cannot be seen."
- Tracey joined created a project called Fork Over Love: dedicated to feeding hungry people and supporting the restaurant industry, which has been hard-hit during the pandemic. They have 110 volunteers, collected $125,000 in donations, and served over 11,000 meals to their entire community—for free. Tracey says, "This organization has completely changed
my life and restored my hope in our world."
- Last but not least: did you know that pygmy goats exist? They're just like regular goats. But smaller. You're welcome.
Such Great News.
-Alex
